How my tank started....

Hi everyone,

I was taking a break today and going through some old pictures and found one of the original piece of crap tank that I had purchased off ebay. It came with the "beautiful stand" and "quarantine tank." It was a POS when my husband picked it up. Salt creep was everywhere, like the owner hadn't done anything with it in a LONG TIME. Came with LR: yea, looked like rock found in the backyard. It's LR NOW, but has taken me FOREVER to get any coral growth on it. The original tank was a 55 gallon with a protein skimmer (HUNG INSIDE THE TANK), 2 biowheel filters, 1 yellow tang (still have her), 1 hermit crab (still have him, he's molted at least 10 times), black gravel (got rid of that), 1 humma trigger (my parents have him), 10,0000K PC lights (they caught on fire and almost burnt the house down this summer....I had the burnt part of the balast covered with duct tape when I got it). I've sinced replaced EVERYTHING except the tang and hermit crab. I thought everyone here might find it amusing. It's amazing the mistakes I made because I didn't read ahead of time. Ebay auction pictures didn't look that bad (they were all close up) and advertised as "reef ready." Oh well, live and learn. I sold it on ebay to another person (empty) but spray painted the rusted stand black so it looked a lot nicer going to a new home.

Also, I got a cool pic of my mandarin today.

Great pics. I am sure your tang is very happy that you purchased the 55!

that's about the cutest mandarin pic I've ever seen! You should crop it and make that an avatar for a while! Looks great!

I'll see if I can do that. I know someone else has one here though. Don't want to copy them, but I'll see if I can do that. Good idea.

LOL I see that you have and the avatar looks great!

So in the first post is the second pic what you got from ebay, and the third pic what you have now?

Thanks. Yep, the first pic is the tank I got off ebay. I have the second tank now (actually purchased that at a garage sale...it was unused and sitting in a basement because no one at LFS wanted it). I like the tank, but it doesn't have accessability underneath. Actually, it is open in the back, but it's so darn close to the wall that I can't get much back there (i.e. sump). Didn't think about that before I filled it and can't move it now!

Sand is all built up in the center/front due to GSM clown kicking it up and away from her BTA. Really annoying habit.

Ok good because the current tank looks a lot better. (I dont like that fake background.) The current tank looks great actually.

I have the opposite problem. My tank is built in, which means it is behind a wall with a hole cut in it. But I really cant get to the front of the tank, it is really hard to reach the glass near the bottom of the front, and I cant reach the sand in the front. Now, if I had known, I would have put a panel in the wall so I could reach the front of the tank.

Thanks. I hated that fake background too. The new tank came with a blue acrylic back already. That's an interesting thought about the built in. I never thought of that! I am looking at putting a tank in the wall when I move in a year or so.
