How much is too much Magnesium?
I goofed up. I made a miscalc and dosed an extra 6oz of the Magnesium I picked up at twopartsolution.com. According to the calculator I should go from 1375 to 1420. Is this anything to worry about? Should I do a water change? How long will it take for it to come down on its own?
What effects (if any) would be signs of stress? I have a frogspawn, green star polyp and some mushrooms. The mushrooms even before I dosed the extra 6oz didn't look happy.
I know I should have measure b4 dosing but I figured the dang calculator was pretty accurate. I did 23oz over 3 days and I figured I needed all 23oz.
btw, my calcium is pretty low at 225-250 right now so hopefully I don't get a snow storm.
Thanks in advance...
Jay

I would just let it go down on it's own, although 1420 is nothing to get excited about ayways. There was recent research being conducted in reference to mag levels near 1600ppm in order to rid byropsis(spelling)...

With the corals you have in your tank dont worry about raising it that fast. Even if you were loaded with sps you still wouldnt probably have to worry about it. and that isnt too high, it just could be a little fast if you had lots of stonies
I agree with what hop said in your other thread. You really need to do some reaading on the relationships of alk, calcium and mag before you go dumping stuff in. I have ahard time believeing your calcium is really at 225 considering your walls arent covered in coralline, and you dont have much of a coral load, assuming you change your water regularly
Water changes and some alk here and there MAYBE are all you need at this point.

I'll do the calcium ref today to make sure my test kit is working. I did have a blossom of green algea all over the glass a few days ago. How can I tell it's coralline? I scrapped it off w/ the big fat magnet so I don't know how hard it really was. My live rock has gotten really red. Is that coralline? Heres a pic.
Call me lazy but I don't like doing water changes!
I'd rather dose all my fluids:
Bionic - Ca (currently 12ml/day)
Bionic - Alk (currently 12ml/day)
2partsolution.com - Mg (done for now)
kent - essential elements (0.5ml/day)
reef plus - vitamins & amino acid suppliments (3ml/day)
kent - strontium & molybdenum (8drop /day)
photoplankton (100 drops/day)
Is there an indicator when I really need to do a water change? Like Nitrates go up? I have Chaetomorpha macroalgae in the refugium and nitrates are 0. Ammonia and Nitirite both 0. Phosphate 0.5
After all my live rock cured I haven't done a water change. I just want to DOSE! What's wrong w/ that?
Thanks,

Jay

Reason: phosphates really 0.5 not 0

You keep dosing all that stuff and you'll need to do water changes daily
You have nothing in the tank that will eat up the amount you are dosing. a 10-20% water change every two weeks is fine, unless something else warrants it.
I still suggest you spend at least a month reading all you can about the relationship between ca, alk mag, sg, temp etc before dosing... Never add anything you can't measure(test for) and the PP IMO is just adding strait Po4 to your tank

The red looks more like cyano starting than coraline.
How long has it been set up?

Its a new tank. Finished cycling w/ live rock just last month.
Humm. PP = phosphate!? Okay I'll cut down. The bottle says 1-5 teaspoons for every 100G (1teaspoon-100drops). I remeasured my phosphate and its 0.5. My skimmer is on but doesn't collect much, is a Remora.
Oh and I retested my Ca and I was using the wrong pipette. It really is at 425.
Hop: I'll keep reading. This forum is great btw.
How can I tell if its cyano or coralline?

IMO the tank is way to young to be dosing all that. just let it go and do water changes on a regular basis. Thats all you need. It is still going through changes as seen with the cyano. Its really not dont going through a cycle, the more you add to it the harder it will be for it to stabilize and mature to a healthy tank. The new water when you do a water change will contain ecverything it needs.

its cyano. regular water changes, skimming well, and good flow will mak it go away

Coraline will have the same tecture as the rock only smoother. It will generally be purple, pink or green. It will not rub off or be pulled of.

ALL THINGS IN BALANCE, Grasshopper! Try keeping Calcium ~ 400 ppm, Alkalinity between 7-11 dKH and Magnesium ~1300-1350. You'll find a sweet spot there!
