Question

How much is too much live sand???

I am starting up a 5.5 gallon reef tank, and I just put live sand and live rock in to begin cycling. I have about 2 inches of live sand on the bottom of my tank. I wasn't sure if that was going to be too much or too deep. I have heard that too much sand can cause unwanted materials to build up and they can't be removed because they are too deep. I think the sand looks good, but I don't want it to come back and haunt me later. Let me know what you think. Thanks

I have about 3 inches of sand in my 30 gal tank. I look forward to purchasing a carpet anemone and they like having a deeper sand bed. It will depend on what you want to keep in the tank. I think 2 inches is fine being that you have a 5.5 gallon tank. You are limited in what you put in the tank. Look up other discussions on DSB. It has been talked about somewhere in TRT and should help you with your question on unwanted material.
