Question

how long will angel live without eating?....

i put a 4" regal angel in my 125 gal reef 12 days ago...

i know the success rate with these fish is low in captivity...

i ordered this fish online from jeff's exotic fish...he looked really good with no signs of stress in the shipping process...

i havent seen him eat anything ive offered the tank...frozen mysis, frozen life-line (herbivore and carnivore), and prime reef flake, all soaked in selcon and/or garlic...i also put seaweed selects on a clip for my tang...

when i first introduced him my small purple tang (3-4") was chasing him a bit...but after several days they seem to get along...although i rarely see the angel at all, he spends most of the time behind the 150#s of LR...

how long could this fish survive with no food?....since hes still alive does that mean hes eating something?...ive never really even observed him pick at the LR...

i thought these fish had a real short digestive track and couldnt go long without something...?

thanks

brad

Hi Have you tried live brine shrimp? A good formula that can be made at home consists of mussels, shrimp, squid, and spinach.
Here is a link you may want to read:

Brad,

Pick up a sack of those black saltwater muscles at the grocery. They look like little clams, about 1 1/2 - 2 inches. Open one up and rinse it well. Put it in the tank in the area where you see the angel spending the most time.
You can leave it in there for about 6 hours before you need to change it out with another one.

Oh, leave it on the half shell.

Jerel,,,,,sounds good, one for the angel,,,two for me,,one for the angel,,,,,,Brad the brand of the Angel Formula is Ocean Nutrition,
not sure who carries it around us call around,if not , let me know , and i can round up a care package of different foods (frozen and others) than you can try.the live brine idea from Johnny is a good idea (as usually ) i think the place in Hobart might have some ,,dunno,,, call around and save some gas.
the brine is a good idea cuz of the movement of the brine shrimp, gotta go along the lines of something that can stay in the tank so the angel can "graze" good lucl , keep me posted

here's another brain activity,,,, how about something along the lines of a piece of fresh clam, scallop, shrimp (well rinsed) fastened in the tank for a bit ,,,at least while you are around to remove it after a while ,,,,no real long term, something the angel can find and check out and pick at for a while,,,just remove / change it b4 it starts to mess with the tank,,,, just a idea

Brad, call around to see who has live brine by us,,,,rumour is it's hard to raise brine to adult size,,, everyone i've known over the years (many of them) only raised brine to "baby" size for fry etc, never to adult,,,

some bad news to report...

i took out the body of my angel tonite...in fact i think he had been dead for a while as he was picked on pretty good and starting to decompose...i was not home last nite to check the tank before the lights went out, so he could have died sometime yesterday...

although i did research this fish, i should have made sure to get a red sea regal rather than the cheaper indian ocean variety...lesson learned...at the expense of a beautiful fish...

i had begun to offer angel formula frozen food, as well as seaweed selects red algae...along with all the foods listed above...

i never once saw him eat a thing...

so i guess the answer to my post is...about 15 days...
