How long for good bacteria to grow?

I put some base rock in my sump and am just curious, how long will it be before the good bacteria is growing on it? I've been keeping the sump in the dark to speed things up.

it does not matter if it is in the dark or not. bacteria will start colonizing it within the first hour of it being in the water. the bacteria is everywhere.

Does this mean that the new colony is mature bacteria, or are they growing a newer colony?
