How long?

I live in Muskogee, Oklahoma and I am blessed and still have electricity, but how long will my tank stay up if I loose the heat and circulation? We are thinking of getting a generator. They are selling them like crazy here. Like get in line and take a number and maybe you'll get one and maybe you won't. These are pics of our house. The second one is on the next street.

a couple more pics. On the last one you can see some lines down. They are our phone and cable lines. We also had our electricity cable go down but it still works. God is Good.

wow, its crazy that snow can do so much damage. that tree looks like it went through a hurricane. I dont know about how long corals can go without circulation but i know that last hurricane we had I lost power at 8 pm and by 11 am the next morning my fish were going nuts. One of my chromis actually jumped out!! luckily we were there to catch him and put him back in. I ended up running to a local tool place and got one of those 400 watt power inverters that u can hook up to the car. That held me over for a couple of days but I had to have the car on until the power came back on.

I am not sure how long a tank can go without power, if you can keep the temp from droping to much that will be a big help. We have had the power go out for six hours and it was not a problem, but that was in the summer. I would say your are very lucky yours hasent gone out. That is a lot of ice. I hope you won't have to find out.

Tape thick styrofoam sheets to the sides of the tank and wrap around a thick comforter blanket.
Have a battery powered air pump
with back up batteries

This wont last long, the tank and house will still drop to unsafe temperatures. Do this while you go for the generator!
Get a Generator,

I would get one, but I rarely loose power and there is not that much snow, wind, or ice here.

i got pics just like that from the ice storm of 2000!! we were without power for 3 days. i just used a power inverter and the car. just powered a PH and a heater. did not loose much if anything. do not worry about lights, they can last a few days without light.

we keep planning on getting a generator, but i want to get one that is propane powered instead of gas. not in the mood to have to use it and the gas has gone bad.

I just installed a 7KW generac which runs on propane. This runs almost my entire house including my 210 and 72 and all of its functions. If you know a good electrician who will work for a 30 pack (after installation of course)you can install this for approx $2500. Its pricey but now I worry about nothing. When the power goes out...it comes on within 15 seconds
when the power comes back...it shuts off. It test runs weekly..or as I program it to. I looked into the larger one also 10kw and 16 kw but decided to get the 7kw"quiet source generac" at Home depot. I was ver surprised at what this thing actually ran......good luck

I have several battery operated air pumps that I use, plus I can heat water quickly in pans on my gas grill or gas fireplace, and pour it in to the tank for warming. Haven't had to do this for a while, but it does work and keeps your corals from freezing. Also, the lights hunters use that are battery powered (three million candles and up) can work, they generate lots of heat and light. You can also run them from a car battery.
