how do these corals reproduce

Hi there

do you still take frags of these corals or do they reproduce in a different way

Heliofungia actiniformis
polyphyllia talpina
Herpolitha limax
Fungia repanda

Basically i mean corals that wave all about in the water, i'm not sure whether they are defined as hard or soft coral

There is also a coral i love that has tenticle but the body is like a big mussel fluro green.

Regards Darren

kind of hard to answer here. My recommendation is to pick up Eric Borneman's Aquarium Corals book. AWESOME book, and goes into a good bit of detail on all the common (and some uncommon) species of corals. Natural location, reproduction methods, care, requirements, etc.

I think this would give you a LOT more detail on each coral's method of reproduction as well as a lot of other good information necessary to get your tank in a condition for that to occur.

here's a link to all the books TRT recommends. This book is the 2nd one:

hahahha....sorry.

Until then...maybe we can give SOME info.

First off...is your question more of a "How do they reproduce in the wild?" or "How do I frag/propigate these corals?"

I'd have to look up the first 3, but fungia I think I can help with.

Also known as a plate coral...you can ACTUALLY just slice these guys up like a pizza and each piece will start to grow into a new plate. Provided the tank conditions are good and stay stable.

another great book is Anthony Calfo's book. Its called Coral Propagation

he has a website that if you post the question there, he will answer it or you can just search there. www.wetwebmedia.com

ANY coral can be propagated. you just need the right tools and water quality.
