With just 20lbs it shouldn't be hard to stick it in a 5 gallon bucket with some of the water from the tank it is coming out of. Once you get it home just stick a powerhead and heater into the bucket and it will be good indefinately.

The rock itself needs no light to remain alive as in to maintain levels of nitrifying bacteria. Any photosynthetic life such as the polyps you mention do need a minimal amount of light in order to survive. They can probably go several weeks without light and come back but I don't know how long they will last. As has been said, to keep the rock alive all you need is a bucket of water a heater and a powerhead. You can use all new water if you want.

If the purpose is to remove nutrients such as phosphates that have been absorbed by the rock then yes, if the purpose is to keep the photosynthetic life on the rock alive then no

I'd recommend just leaving the rock in the dark for a while; if the polyps don't make it, you'll be able to easily find something to replace them should you desire. The overhead in keeping the rock lit seems too much trouble in my opinion.
You can use new water for the LFS, and I'd recommend changing the water out every 3-4 weeks if you're going to be storing it for a while. Also, don't enclose it (make sure it's got decent air flow over the water surface), and top it off with fresh water. I've had rock in a bucket since november, and it seems to be doing quite well.

I kept 200lbs LR for about 1 month in trash cans with airstones, small pumps 300gph for flow and heaters to keep water @ 78 degrees.
Water was added twice for evaporation. No probs with rock once tank was refurbished.

Ok So I got the LR. About 30#. The guy that gave it to me didn't give me much water so had to put in a small buckett as you can see. How long will the exposed rock stay alive. I wont be able to get to the FS till after work tomorrow. There is a pump at the bottom BTW.

You need a bigger bucket and so some water changes to it, It is very dirty and You can have much better rock by keeping it clean with WC's and in the dark while you are waiting to place in your tank. Have good water movement and skim if you can.

It's already tomorrow, but it shouldnt be too much of a problem. If you dont get it done tonight, put a damp towel over the rocks. Good luck!
