hospital/quarantine tanks questions

So the bigger percula has this whitish stuff on it, not ich, possibly brooklynella or maybe a fungus/bacteria

I ran out and got a 10g to house her in (what a b-tch catching him). Put main tank water in, a heater and a powerhead with an airline (b/c of the formalyn) and put in a piece of pvc for a shelter.

The foramyln calls for 2 drops per gallon, treat veryother day until gone and then retreat in 10 days. It wasn't a dip. So she will be in there awhile. I also put in an antifungal/bacteria (maracyn or malacyn??, suppose to be bad for starfish) to stop any secondary infections. Per..

Do you run any filters off of the tank?

And if I rinse it out good can I use it as a quarantine tank?

Keep the meds in it and treat all new arrivals?

Obviously I want it totally seperate form main tank.

Being 10 gallons, I can't keep that many fish in for quarantine when I get new ones can I?

My 02

Can you provide a picture of the fish.

If the fish has brook then formalin is the recommended solution ... I have always used the more concentrated formalin bath which may be required depending on the severity of the problem.

Here's a link which discusses how to perform a formalin bath .. might help. Note that the doseage recomended is based on using std formalin ... the formalin3 sold by many LFS is a diluted mixture.

http://www.petsforum.com/personal/tr...alinbaths.html

Remember that formalin will make short work of any biological filter your using ... be prepared to make water changes to maintain water quality (focus on ammonia). Also note that formalin becomes more toxic at temperatures exceeding 79/80 degrees. If your going to use an antibiotic maracyn 2 is far more effective than maracyn .. however I would avoid using unless necessary.

You won't have any problem using the hospital tank as a future QT ... just rinse the tank out with a mild bleach solution and let dry.

Hope this helps.

When you get new fish do you medicate them as precaution or just monitor?

Two legit schools of thought. Some will QT and only treat based on symptoms shown .. others will use prophylactic treatments.

I give all of my fish a mild formalin bath before they go into the QT. I then run my Qt using hyposalinity for 4 weeks and then use the 5th week to raise the salinity and "deworm" the fish to eliminate intestinal parasites (common in wild caught fish).

The formalin bath gets rid of most external parasites (flukes etc) and the hypo insure they are ich free. I keep a close eye for any signs of amylo and if so I will raise the salinity in the QT and treat with cupramine copper.

Hope this helps.
