ummm, how can you buy something and not even know the name of what you are buying? I'm guessing this means you didn't know the corals needs before you purchased it, including if your tank levels or lighting are substantial/correct enough for it? Just a thought.

If he's residing in the coral and its an acropora, then he's known by the scientific name of "Acropora crab"! I've got several in my acro's and they seem to actually take care of the coral, chasing off critters that might mess with the coral. I've never seen a hermit crawling around on them, anyway.

If the crab was in the colony, I'm guessing that it's a commensal crab, which I've always heard referred to as a porcelain crab. It belongs to that acropora colony, and needs to stay with it.

I would also reinterate that it's probably best for both the coral and your system that you know what you're buying before bringing it home. And if (and when) you fall prey to that pretty thing at the LFS, have references at home so you can easily access the name and requirements of the coral.
