Hitchhiker Anemone Identification
Hi TRT!
I recently purchased a green and purple zoo colony. It is a good size rock, about 7" across. When I got it home, I noticed a purple nobbed shroom growing, and smack dab in the middle of the zoo colony is an anemone! He is about the size of a quarter, and appears transparent with white rings going down his arms. I tried getting a close-up pic with NO luck. I posted updated tank pics yesterday and you can see just him in one of the shots. I fed him a piece of squid last night with my tongs and he aggressivley took it! I am just wondering if he is safe? I have all softies in the tank and do not want anything to disrupt the environment. Thanks for any input....Anthony

Aiptasia is an anemone . . . a pest anemone. They start out very small and can grow to be very noticable (maybe 2-3 inches tall with their tentacles out) . . . but usually not "large" like other anemones (say . . . 12 inches or so in the captive tank)
Anyway, if it is aiptasia then you need to get rid of it now . . . because it will begin to multiply in your tank . . . little anemones everywhere. And, once you've got them . . . you will pretty much always have them springing up here and there. Very annoying.
So run a check on google or something and see if that's what you've got. If so, NUKE IT!!!

Hi,
I too had one of these that came in on a piece of rock back in May...it is sort of a brownish pink with white rings on the tentacles. I, after looking at pictures of aiptasia, decided it is NOT that. I also have ruled out majano... Mine remained in the same spot all summer and got to the size of a 50 cent piece... about 2 weeks ago I actually watched this anemone SPLIT!!! Now the "baby" has moved just a little away from its "mama" and they seem perfectly happy. I would love to find out what this is.. I am just leaving it as it does not seem to pose a threat.
Anyone have any ideas OTHER than aiptasia or majano???
Thanks,
Jenni

Mine does not have long tentacles at all. They are, in fact, very short and compact and at times, even have bubble tip ends...

Hi guys!
Thanks for the imput. The tentacles are long and skinny---pink with white rings. It is very close--actually in the middle of the zoo colony--I have included the best pic I could get....Anthony

Thanks Tim and everyone else who chimed in. Pepperment shrimp will be added this weekend. Will they bother my other shrimp (skunk & fire) or softies?...Anthony

they should not bother anyone. they do like to pick. they may look like they are picking at your corals but are really only going after junk around they. it may take a few days before they find him, but when they do!......my daughter calls them the dancing shrimp. they will look like they are dancing when they are just sitting around!
