Hippo Tang or Yellow Tang?
Ok guys I知 going to be bad. I currently have a 36 gal that I知 stocking (Pics being posted today!) and I really, really want a tang. I know, I know they need ample swimming space but, I have seen @ two local shops a 3 ス inch + Purple Tang in a 29 and a 3 to 4 inch Hippo Tang in a Red Sea 34! I知 no Dr. Doolittle but the fish seem happy constantly lapping the tank and so on. To my surprise the Purple Tang is not overly aggressive. So would I be a bad guy doing the same? I know neither of these fish will live in my tank for life but if the fish is small enough is it really necessary to have a large tank?

Not a good idea on many levels. Obviously tangs need much more space to be happy long term. Big or little, they are a very active swimmer and need the space period. But something else to consider is that a 36 isnt a size that can take alot of fish no matter what kind. Simply doesnt have he volume to handle the waste. How long hav the fish at the shops been in these tanks? Are they for sale? Very common to see fish in small tanks at shops, they are on a temporary residency program. I would strongly reconside this plan or just get a bigger tank!!!!! Oh and be prepared, this is a hot button issue for many.

Yeah I figured that people would get a lil ticked. I know the Hippo has been in their for at least 1 yr the Purple at least six months. Both fish are not for sale they are the owners own tanks.

IMO, that doesnt make it a good idea just because someone else does it. Im one of those that thinks you shouldnt do it without a bigger tank so Ill let others chime in.

34g is too tiny. But I am sure if it is something you really want to do, you will do it regardless of what others have to say about it.

Trust me when I tell you I know how it feels to see a fish and really want it and to have others tell you its not a good idea. The thing I always have to tell myself at these times is Whats best for the fish? Would the fish be happy? If I cant provide the correct conditions for the fish I find something else that would work. Look for other fish that would be happy in your set up.

I wouldnt say a bad guy. It would be irresponsible going agaisnt what nearly EVERY single experienced reefer woudl tell you is ok.
And if you stay int his hobby for a while and learn for yoruself how certain animals behave you will look back on it and understand how poor of a decision it really was.
Im not in any way saying I havent done stupid and irresponsible things I knew I shouldnt have. I have, but I regret every single one of them.

Not necessarily. I wouldn't do just because I like the fish. I'd rather have happy fish! I’m sure a Flame Angle would scratch my itch =) I just wanted to get opinions of what YOU guys think. I've seen it done but again I’ve seen a lot of things done, doesn’t really make it a good idea but a good question.

Yup...we've all seen it done and we will all see it done again...just because it shouldn't be done doesn't stop a lot of people...I have a blue and yellow in my 125 (6 feet long) and they zoom from one end to the other...sometimes I watch them and think the 125 is not big enough for them...you asked so I'll give you my opinion straight up, LOL! There are no tangs that you should keep in that size tank...admire them from afar until you have a setup that can properly house them.

And I got rid of my hippo from my 150 because I thought it was too small of a tank... and the fish was only 3". It was just way too cramped in there, so he got rehomed into a 300 at a buddy's place. I'm sure I'll make more stupid decisions, but listen to what folks are saying here.
