High Alkalinity!

I got an Alkalinty test at last and tested way high, almost off the chart. I've never tested for it before as PH and calcium have always been good.
Whats best to do? I'm doing 20% w/c daily but is there something else I should do or an easier way to bring it back into spec? Everything in the tank id doing ok (apart from my torch) but there is zero (and I mean ZERO) coroline growth.

If your alk level is off the chart you probably don't have much calc either ... water changes are the easiest way of restoring normal water chemistry.

Using a 2 part calc and buffer (bionic). I tested calc a couple of days ago and it was 420. To be honest thats why I've never tested for alk before... I figured if ph was good and calc was in range then alk would be good. I know better now!
I was hoping I would get away with something other than changing out all the water. That will teach me for making assumptions
Thanks for the replies

I don't think it is possible to have a super high alk level and a calc reading of 420 -- might check and see if your test kit has an expiration date.

Hmmmm, that's why I never tested for alk before, guess I'll need to check the dates
Thanks Kevin

Also, it does raise the question which test kit is bad.

Apart from a lack of coroline growth, is there any other ill effects I would see with high alk? (I think it measured out at 7meq/l).

Ok, checked again last night and Alk is down to 5meq/l, Calc is on the money at 425, PH is about 8.15. Looks like things are moving in the right direction. I don't know if I trust the Alk test kit as I couldnt find an experation date on it (Fastest).
I guess with things getting to normal it's time for me to dredge through old posts to try and kick start the coraline growth .
