Hey guys im back with my new camera and pictures< questions too!!
Well here are some of the pictures that I have promised you all. Things are looking very good but now suddenly a few problems have arrised. Here are my questions.
1. in the first 2 pics this is a coral that I got for 15.00. Can someone tell me what kind it is. It had a bunh of tenticle things that would come out of it and now it is not doing this. Is there someting wrong?
Here are my water parameter for my 72 Bow as of yesterday.
PH 8.0
DKH 8.3
Calcium 500 PPM
Nitrites, Nitrates, and ammonia all At 0
Temp 77.2
Gravity is .024
Lighting is stated below and on for 10 hours a day.
Using only RODI water for everything.
What do you thing could be causeing the behavior to change?
Feeding algae to Tang every other day and feeding clowns dry food every other day.
I am starting to notice That one of my clowns has just a couple of white spots on him. I would assume Ich. Can this be treated in the same tank?
Thanks again for all the help and input on this.
Mike

the coral looks like a leather coral. do you have flow on it? they need to shluff off a mucos membrane, and without flow it can build up and cause them not to put out their polyps. they are also moody, so it could just be getting used to the tank still.

That's a toadstool leather, I believe. I'm used to seeing them without as many folds in the head but it sure looks like a toadstool. It is quite normal for them to close up at times, sometimes mine will close for days. It's most likely going to get a shiny slime coating while it's closed and it will eventually start to shed this coating and then the polyps will open again. I'm not sure why they close up occasionally but I wouldn't worry about it unless it starts to bend at its base or 'melt'. I'm sure someone on here can explain why they go dormant at times, but again, I've found that mine always opens back up only to repeat the 'dormant' phase every so often.

I agree that it looks like a leather coral, toadstool coral, and I have a book that calls em mushroom coral. Many different names.
You may try a distilled water dip with your clown fish. When I first got my clown pair, I had one that got a few white spots, and after about 5 freshwater dips, he was fine. I just used a small tuberware bowl with distilled water (I think it's the same as RODI water but not sure) and dipped him for 5-6 minutes at a time, and I repeated that everyday or every other day. It's not easy catching them! I was fortunate that my tank had very little rock at the time so it wasn't hard for me.
None of my other fish had problems, so I dont think it was ich in my case, but I'm not sure.

yes its a leather, mine did same thing actually bent right over and turned a darker brown, thought it was a gonner. Then on day it just stood up and slowly sluffed off a mucus coat and the polyps came out again. It was dormant for three weeks so don't panick everything I've read says they are very very hardy.

Mine never closes up, but sorta shrivels up and a few hours later I see small streams of mucous suspended in trails leading off of it. It then puffs back up larger than before. Someone above hit it on the head...they are moody. For being one of the easiest corals to take care of, they shure do like to whine a lot. Ha!
Good luck!

Well Thanks everyone. Still nothing new with the coral but i guess that he could just be getting used to the new tank. It has only been one week, so giving it wome time may be ok. I do have the flow from the sump return pointed right at him so I am sure that he has some movement.
As far as the clown, i am just going to monitor him for now. If it gets worse then I will do a dip in RODI. The other fish at this time do not seem to be affected.

Just a side note....if your leather is starting to show signs of extending its polyps but the mucas film hasn't fully shed off the head (full flow will help with that, though), you can help it by suctioning off the mucas film with a turkey baster. I actually do this to mine everytime he comes out of his mood. Not only are you giving it a hand and hastening its extension, but I also don't like to have the 'skin' floating around in the tank after it sheds.
