Question

hermit crab question

I was just wondering whether i should get any blue leg hermits for my 75 gallon. the reason i am being hesitant is because i have never had any hermits before and have read peoples posts about them terrorizing systems and eating corals. I only have snails (a variety of species) that have been doing a decent job of keeping the tank clean. just thought i would add a few just to add a bit of diversity. Are they worth the risk?

I have blue and red hermits and I've never seen them hurt a coral. They do show up in larger shells from time to time, and I have to assume that they happened across a poor dying snail and saw to it that their death was not in vain.

if your tank is doing fine with the snails i would stay withthem.
as butch pointed out if they want a bigger house....
unless you can fine a hermit bigger than thenthe snails already.

I have hermits in ALL my tanks. They've never killed ANYTHING (except maybe each other...but I've never seen it).

Provided you add some new shells from time to time, this is the ONE time I will disagree with G~. in MY experience...hermits are harmless, and QUITE amuzing!!

just every couple months, for a couple bucks, get some empty shells that are slightly bigger than the one's they are in...drop them in...and they'll bother no one.

I have both hermits and snails - - I like them both for different reasons, and I've never had an issue with the hermits picking at the corals. They are a blast to watch too!

Blasphemy, i say, Blasphemy!!! no frags for you!!!

oh wait, i do not have anything to frag yet, so that does not work.

if you can supply enough grow up shells than hermits can be kept mostly in check. i still do not trust them.

hahahaha...I didn't mean it...honest...

wait...yes I did.

But like I said...(as far as I know), it's the ONE issue I disagree with you on.

to counteract, how about this: Do you like Pizza? I like pizza! See...bet we're good now!
