Hermit Crab ID

I've had this guy for a while. I got him when I bought a bunch of blue legged crabs. He's obviously not a blue legged crab and since I bought him, about a year ago or so, he's gotten HUGE!

Since I didn't know how "reef safe" he is, I've always kept him in my fuge. Now, I'm just kind of curious if anyone knows what type of hermit crab he is. The shell he's in is about as big around as a 50 cent piece

If they have the stripes and dots on their legs with some hair (and no red/blue colors), usually those are "regular" sand hermits and are not reef safe, mainly because they get so big!

He is definitely big! He probably would go after some smaller fish, which is why I've kept him in the fuge. He does a pretty good job at cleaning the sand though in the fuge though!

If anyone comes across a name for this crab, I'd appreciate it (would like to know what kind of hermit he is).

From a post on another board came this ID and I think they are right:

Phimochirus holthuisi

From this page, they may be reef safe, although as Hardhat said, they do get big and that alone might make them non-reef safe:

I would like to reiterate the agressive part. I had one in a softy tank for over a year, and I finally pulled him because I got tired of him eating all of my snails, other hermits, small fish....

Well, I have to change my earlier statement....greenbean has it right. Here's a pic by someone else of Clibanarius vittatus

I think that's a winner, thanks! He will definitely be staying in the fuge.
