Here Goes A Stupid Question.

Is it possible to drill into a glass tank?
i have a water temp issue with my tank and can't seem to find a solution. i've been given suggestions but some might just not work such as the Mini Refrigirator/freezer, and the window Mount A/C unit.
someone please tell me if this would work.
this micro probe chiller is an idea. but it needs to be drilled into the tank.

IS THIS POSSIBLE?

i have a 55 gal all glass tank.

New to the hobby and living in the middle of California I have the same concern as you. Tank Temp. in Summer. Truthfully, I have considered a chiller as it is really a drop in the bucket compared to the initial setup of the tank.

Since I've seen two (maybe more) posts from you on this same subject I would suggest that you bite the bullet and purchase the chiller. I'm sure it will certainly give you peace of mind when summer gets here.

**EDIT**
Almost forgot to answer your question - Yes it's possible to drill into a glass tank. You need to determine what type of tank however as the glass can be different.

I don't see those drill in thermo coolers are very effective but I could be wrong..

Remember, the only stupid questions are the ones I ask

My beer fridge project thread is running here too as well as one more right now. This seems to be a big problem

Look closely into the thermoelectric chiller probes. Using only one will not be effective in a 55g tank. You'd need several, then your pricing yourself into a standard chiller, which will be more effective anyway. Do more research into chillers. "Drilling can be chilling" Besides, is the tank already set up? Are you going to take it down to drill it? Very doubtful it can be done set up, and potentially the tank is tempered and cannot be drilled at all.

I know very little on chillers, I haven't gotten that far into my setup to know if I'll need one.

Tank drilling, on the other hand, I just had my glass 65 drilled for overflows and CLS.

It can be done safely IF the tank is not tempered. If it is tempered, it can still be done but the probability of the glass shattering is extremely high.

My understanding is that all glass tanks have a sticker that will let you know it is tempered glass. If yours doesn't, write an email to the manufacturer and give them the specs on your tank and they'll tell you whether or not you can drill it.

Another thing, don't count on a LFS to offer any guarantee on the tank once they drill it. The manufacturer will also not honor their warranty.

Good luck!
