Help with overflow!!

i want to put a 10 gallon sump under my 55 gallon reef.(10 gallon is all i can fit under there). my tank is not drilled and i will need an overflow. im worried that the overflow could fail and i would have a catastrophic flood! do you guys recommend a good, safe, reliable overflow to get water from my 55 to my sump. any help would be greatly appreciated

I'm interested in tagging along on this one. I have been looking at the option of overflows as well but have the same question myself.

I can't offer any current experience on overflow boxes, but I have ordered the Eshopps PF800 overflow for my upcoming 55G build. I read plenty of good things about the Eshopps U-Tube style overflows. The only one I've read about that got higher marks are LifeReef overflows, but they are much more expensive. Once I get it up and running, I'll certainly post back with details for anyone who cares. Of course, by that time you'll probably already have made your decision.

I LOVE my Eshopps!!!

It was 1/3rd the cost of life reef and works great. I have never ever had an accident with it. I turn off my sump for feeding, cleaning, etc about 3 times a week. So that means 3 power failure tests a week and it restarts perfect ever time.

The only cheap part about it is the u-tube is not fixed in place, but that is a non-issue. And to stop air bubbles from getting into the u-tube I extended the pipe on the in-flow side to within 1/2 inch of the bottom of the black box and don't have air bubbles in the u-tube.

i had an eshopps too. definately not a bad overflow, but it did worry me about losing siphon at some point down the road.

that being said, i'm in the same boat as brocnizer. i turned my return pump off many many times when it was hooked up and it never lost siphon once. i'd have to say, in that respect, i would recommend it.
