Help with montipora

Well after reading all of fat tonys posts im sure he will chime in seeing as he seems to know his montis my orange monti started out at about an inch squared now its around 3-4in my question is every time it seems to encrust to a diffrent rock it seems to have this white stringy "spit" comming off of it......1. is this normal and 2. why is it growing so fast iv only had it about 2 months
tests are all normal -0- ph is 8.3 after the bulbs have been on for a bit 8.1 when there out.


there under 150watt M/H lights in a 10g (i know smallllll tank for sps) but there being moved once my larger tank has cycled.

The only time I've ever seen stringy stuff coming off of monti's is during mishandling. And, if you're having growth issues (ie. too fast), then I'd say you're doing a great job! Montiporas grow fast in general and are very hardy anyway. Your pH doesn't seem too bad but you're expected to have a slight drop in pH when the lights are out anyway. A 10 gallon tank isn't "bad", but I can only see you having to prune it constantly. Therefore a larger tank seems like the only option at this point. Otherwise, your calcium level will drop off pretty fast; your Alk readings won't seem right. Personally, I think nanos are only good for LPS and Softies.

i havent touched it since it went in the water, it seems like every 2 weeks the white stuff starts and by the weekend its grown a bit more

I'd like to see a pic of this stringy stuff... but as far as growth goes... they can be quite vivacious

that does sound kind of odd but doesnt sound like something i would worry about since the monti is growing fast and looking healthy besides the white stringy substance, is there anything else in the tank

Just for reference, I get about 3/4" a month growth in plates, more if it is encrusting... on the order of 1-1.5"

tony, can you pm me some of the specs and equipment on your tank? i have horrible growth on my montis, maybe im doing something wrong.....or they are still recovering from the tank crash a while ago.lol
