help with hang on filter

i just got another little tank (full setup, yes I know I didnt need another one!) and it came with one of those hang on filters with the biowheel. I think its a marineland/aquarium systems. it was working fine at the dudes house but now it wont keep a flow. its clean, not clogged. if you know how a powerfilter sounds when you first start it up and until it gets going, it sounds like that, but it wont 'get started' even if i keep pouring water in it. any ideas?

thanks.

do i even need the filter?! tank's got 2 in. live sand, 20-30 lbs LR, been set up for 2 yrs. has a banded goby, psychadelic mandarin(who will be a resident in my 120) and a coral banded shrimp. has two powerheads, heater, 65w pc retrofit.

Sounds like a bad impeller, or one that is not seated right in the chamber. try redo'ing the impeller in it's housing, or you possibly need a new impeller, the magnet in those have been known to get "screwy"

Sometimes they have a little knob that turns to turn the flow off while you mess with the filter bag also.

i got it! it was a gray lever on the left that needed to be lifted up. i guess its some kind of flow regulator. i'll post pics of the tank tomorrow when its all cleared up.
