Help with baby green brittle stars

Hi everyone,
This is my first time on the list so I hope I'm doing this right!

I have had an adult green brittle star for months, and now I notice I have HUNDREDS of little baby brittle stars all over my tank, in the live rock and in the crushed coral bottom. I started doing some research and thanks to your site found that the green brittle star is most likely the one causing my many "friends" to disappear. I am going to take the adult brittle star out, but now what do I do about all the babies (who are smaller than a finger nail tip to tip)???
Any advice would help (will something eat the little ones?)
Thanks!!!
Mindy

Welcome to TRT!!!

You are correct in that your green brittle is probably the cause of disappearing fish. They are notorious predators, they "tent" themselves and drop down on unsuspecting fishes as they dart beneath them to hide.

Having said that, it's highly unlikely that the tiny brittles you are seeing in your tank are of the same specie. "Mini" stars are quite common and they are a welcome addition to reef tanks. They stay small, unlike their green cousins - biggest "wingspan" I've seen is about quarter-sized, most stay about dime-sized with body discs about the size of the head of a pin or slightly larger. These are wonderful detritivores and scavengers - let them be.

I would either sump that big brittle or find another home for it. Meanwhile, feed it well with pieces of clam or squid or krill and it is a bit less likely to dine on your piscine friends

HTH

Thanks Jenn - I had no idea! At first I was all excited, and then when I started doing some research and found out how mean green brittles are I freaked out! Hopefully they are good ones!!

I'm sure the minis are fine - quite desirable in fact.

The green one is another story
