HELP! tank pollution!

Hello everybody, just wanted to introduce myself as this is my first post. Sadly it's because I ran into a little trouble over the holiday weekend. Well, more like I ran into trouble after leaving my tank alone for 4 days while I was gone.

I have a 60 gallon reef and my purple long tentacle anemone decided to get swept into a powerhead and was decapitated into a million pieces completely clouding my water. My true percula was also found dead at the scene. I found all this as I returned home last night but I have no idea when it happened. I immediately changed 1/4 of the tank's water last night and this morning the water looks a bit clearer. My fish do not look very happy though, I'm scared I might lose more too.

Can anyone offer any other advice of what I should do?? Thanks in advance!

Although I don't have personal experance with this (knock on wood)...

What I have heard others do were:

Add fresh carbon.
20% water changes I think someone said daily, others say every other day.
Crank up the skimmer to pull "weak tea".

In your shoe's I would add carbon asap, crank up the skimmer and wait for an expert to reply on how to do water changes...

Well I got various answers back...

One said change 10% per day till you have changed 120% of the tank volume (complete water replacement)

Another said 20% every 3 days for a week (about 50-70% of the water volume of the tank changed).

Personally... I mix my SW in batchs of 30 gal's (32 gal brute can) and I have a 125 tank (about 140 or 150 gal when you count sump+tubes, filters, etc. So if it were me, I'd be changing 30 gals every 3 days till I changed out three times (90 gal) and see where I'm at (ie how do the corals look, how do the fish look, etc.) If eveyone seems to be doing fine after changing all the water I'd say your out of the woods.

Hopefully some more people will chime in here soon!

Thanks for the replies, I appreciate the help. I think I'll keep changing until I hit 90%, then I'll keep up with weekly changes.. luckily my tank is only a 60 so it should change out relatively quickly.

Here is a pic of the 2 deceased.. RIP

Thats a great pic. I feel for you loss. I am always worried something is going to go wrong when I leave for the weekend. How do you post a pic without making it a thumbnail?
Welcome to the board by the way.

First thing I'd do is test parameters. Find out what is going on chemically and go from there. Fresh carbon, as mentioned, crank up the skimmer, if there is any debris from the anemone puree, get it with the siphon and if you have mechanical or chemical filtration, clean the media.

HTH

Jenn

P.S. Welcome to TRT!

Tank is looking better already.. my fish are up and about *phew!*

Tasher you can use photobucket.com to host your pics. I think it works great, underneath each photo you upload it provides a img tagthat you can copy and paste into msg boards and the pic will show up. This is what an image tag looks like..

I put a space in the link above so you can see.. but here it is the right way
