Help! Tang in trouble!
I purchased a sailfin tang, Zebrasoma veliferum, 3 days ago. Perfect health and shape. I even timed the purchase so I would get it before it went into the LFS tanks, in a hope to avoid double shock. the Fish was active and eating untill about 2:00pm today. It found a spot behind a rock and wont eat is breathing very rapidly. It seems to have a problem keeping itself upright. It also appears that its color is a tiny bit faded. however his fins are still standing high. I have moved it to a refugium where I can keep a better eye on it but I am cocerned I do not have long as this sickness has come on so quick. At first I thought it may be an outside pollutant that got in the tank, but that would affect all fish.
Water tests:
Am-0
Ni-0
Na-0
pH-8.2-8.4
Cal-450
Dkh-8
76-78 degrees.
Thanx for any help,
Michael

If you got it directly from the shipping bag, its prolly dealing with acclimation and shipping stress, what if any acclimation method did you use?

Sorry! Salinity is 1.024 to 1.025. The acclimatization method I use is, I tranfer the fish or coral to a 1/2 gallon bucket with enough water from the LFS to cover the fish so he can move a little. Then I drip feed my water at about 3 drops a second until the container has about 4 parts my water to 1 part the lfs water. I then float the container in my sump untill the temp is equal. I will then net the fish out or in the case of a tang i gently remove it with my hand and place it in the tank. When I am acclimatizing fish I also turn down the lights to actinic only.
Anyway, the poor guy did not make it through the night. Does anyone have any idea what may have happened?
Also, I believe this fish was from a rearing facility in Salinas PR which is only about an hour from the LFS. From what I have been told the facility rears many different species from a juvenille stage to better acclimatize them to aquarium life and foods.

Sounds like shipping stress ,sometimes its not good to buy them in the bag, its 50 /50 they live ,I figure if they can live in the LFS water then they are very hardy and will buy them after about 2 weeks of being at the LFS.

Everybody keeps saying shipping stress, but he was perfect for 2 days, and then rapidy took his turn for the worse. I mean he was eating within hours and swimming with the other fish. He was not hiding or labouring at all. If it was shipping stress, then I would assume that he would have a slow decline over the few days.

I had the same situation with my Black Cap Basslet which was just put in the LFS from shipping and I came in a saw it and bought it like 2 hrs of being in the LFS tank after seeing him eat. The fish was eating for 2 days no problems then it was starting to go down hill and died. I tried it again about a month later, but had the LFS hold it for a week or so and see how it did and have had no problems with the current black cap. I believe it might have been cyanide or shipping stress that took the first black cap.
Just my thoughts
I am sorry about your tang passing

Thanx to all. With cyanide, I heard that a sympton is a complete lack of appetite. Is that true?
