Help puter freaks
I stuck a CD in the drive and closed it, instead of it opening the files on the disk it went into that blinky mode, froze up, etc and wont open the tray when I hit the button. OK I pried it open and retrieved the disk but the tray no longer works and its still blinking. I can push it back about half way then it starts a nasty racheting sound(same one I heard when I opened it) Did I kill it

"It's dead, it's dead, it's really dead!!"

Doug,
Sure sounds terminal to me. This isn't on the new one is it? Normal CD drives are real cheap right now; probably cheaper to buy a new one than try to have someone fix it. Or, I've got an old 4x you are welcome to!

Hello Doug, that was kind of a no no my friend, LOL. If your tray won't open, go to your desk top, left click on "MY COMPUTER", choose the drive that won't open, most likely drive "D" or "E", right click on that drive, and left click on "EJECT" . The disk probably frooze up because it was dirty or something. Computers are man made and they all act funny at some time or another. The clicking sound youy heard was the white plastic gear trying to engage to spit out your tray/disc. It could be a bad belt or you didn't seat the disc flat in the tray. If it is still clicking, it's probably broken by now. Not expensive to fix though. Hope this helps my friend, take care.

I would not bother with trying to fix it. CD ROM drives are so cheap now that they are almost a throw away item. I would just go to the store and buy a new one. Most of them are plug and play, so you won't even have to worry about installing new drivers. If I have to spend more than 5 minutes fixing a CD drive, I junk it and get a new one.

Well I dont know about 21 century but afiend from work is cobbling together a PII 400mghz 384 RAM with a 40gig HD so I should be on the leading edge of near obsolesence. A CD burner and Athlon processor are in my future

Congrats on the newer computer Doug! My home PC's are 450 Mghz P3 with 512 RAM. They are plenty fast for even the newer games and programs. Put Windows 2000 on that thing and it should be fairly stable as well. Now if we can only get you upgraded to cable or DSL. 56K dialup is so 1990's.

Bwhahahahahaha!!!
Doug, you so crazy!
I got pissed off at an unresponsive DVD drive once and did the same thing (I'm usually not such a hot head, must have been a bad day) but if you just open the thing up you can most likely fix it easily. It is probably just something came off track. But honestly just got to Best Buy and pick one up. BTW, that puter you are getting sounds pretty decent for internet use.

most cd drives can be manually ejected once the computer is turned off, or u couldve just restarted the puter, wait till it turned back on then try ejecting again.

No, that wouldn't have worked, it needed to be open NOW!
Hehehehe

Ok, I'll fess up since you all know I'm a total puter dunce anyway, it's not like it's going to tarnish my reputation I gave Doug the "pry it open" advice. My CD tray was stuck after one of the kids shoved it back in too hard, rather than using the button. Grrrrrrr. Anyway, after trying all of the above mentioned remedies I was at the point of either taking the whole case apart or trying to manually get it open. Hubby pried it open with a butter knife, lol, it popped right out and has been fine ever since
Sorry Doug!

Hello Puter freeks and geeks-
'When I had that problem...' I am always opening stuff up and checking out how things work. My CD drive had a little notched rubberband thingy (yes, that is the technical term!) it came of the flywheel dealy bobber (yes, that is too), so I hooked it back around it and no problems since!! Goodluck and if you guys need more tech help, I'm here!
