help please trochus snail/pyramid


i pulled a trochus/(maybe astraea) out of the water and there are a bunch of little white snails, look like pictures ive seen of pyramids, but do they eat other snails too? any ideas what to do?? gonna try to get a pic... BRB!!

here are some terrible pics of what they are, i picked them all off, at least all the ones i could see, if others were inside the shell, who knows. any info on these guys?

They eat other mollusks so yah your snail would qualify as a snack. In small quantities the pyrs are no big deal... I have a red margin wrasse that chomps on every pyra and bristleworm it lays its eyes on. Other people have had good success with a six line wrasse.

Apparently there are different types of Pyramidial(sp?) snails. THe ones you find eating your cleanup crew won't harm your clams, but they will decimate your cleaners. THis also works in reverse with the clam eating variety not eating your clean up crew.

well, i dont have any clams yet, but im glad i pulled them just to be sure, i read here http://www.xtalworld.com/Aquarium/hitchfaq.htm that they are species specific. i only have 3 trochus, so they wouldnt make it far.

yeah they look pretty bad . hopefully you can remove them your self. since they are so small not sure how else you can get them off. any type of dip will kill your snail..

i pulled everything off i could see, so ill keep my eyes peeled now that im on to them. sneaky little buggers. have no idea where they came from. but ill be watching. you can be ashured!

huh, never knew they also hosted onTrochus snails. i knew about clams and Astreas.

i cant id the host, it very well could be an astreae. any tips to tell them apart?

an easier way to tell is if you flip one on its back, if it violenty flaps it foot around to right itself it is a trochus if it kinda sits there wiggling around than it is an Astrea.
