Help please. Alge

Hello Everyone,

I am a newbie, my very first tank. Been brewing for 4 mo. I have something in my tank and I don't know for sure what it is or how to get rid of it.

Could anyone help?

It is like a slimy black slimy gunk on the sand and rocks. Not all of them but some, and air bubbles get traped in it. It will roll up when I clean it off the sand, but I can't get rid of it. I have looked everywhere and I'm sure because I am new I can't figure out what it is.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Lisa

Can you send a picture?

Does it grow into long tendrils that flow around with the water?

It may be cyanobacteria. If so, it's a normal phase for a new tank to go through. You can pull it out as it grows. As you do, you're removing the nutrients that sustain it. It should eventually subside.

Mine went through this. I would pull out handfulls of it and it would grow back. After a month or so, it just disappeared. I'm not certain if the purigen or carbon I added helped. This was in my 12 gallon jbj nano.

Thanks for the reply. Yes it is stringy. I am scrubbing and cleaning so much that the clown won't come out from behind a rock! Poor thing. I think we were over feeding a bit too. I have cut back on the food for the last day or two and it seems to help some. I don't use carbon. Does it help? My husband and I just started our tank the beginning of June. I can't figure out how to get a picture in the post.

Thanks for your help.

To get a picture in your post, you have to click "reply" thenon the screen where you type your post, look at the bottom. There is a button called "manage attachements" or soemthing like that. Click that, and use that tool to upload your image. Once its uploaded to your profile, you can link to it as much as you want.

sounds like cyano bacteria to me. usually caused by overfeeding or to heavy of a bioload for your system.

when was the last time you siphoned detritus when doing a water change? this should be done everytime you do a water change. you should also crank up the skimmer so that it pulls a wet foam.

I used a turkey baster, and removed it totally.
scrubbing it off seemed to make it spread ?
