Help-noisy overflow

The overflows on my 120G AGA tank are really starting to get noisy, every 15 seconds or so they make a loud sucking noise-

I have a mag 18 running full bore back to the tank with a about a 5' run I have 2 corner overflows

is my return too fast or too slow ?????

The durso looks a lot like what came with my corner flows (tank is about 1 year old)- the noise just seems to be alot worse the last few weeks and nothing has changed with the tank.

I'm in the same situation it always made some noise but it's really loud now. Maybe we have some kind of build up or something my tank is 11 months old

I'm going to try reducing mine from 1.5" inside diameter to 1", 3/4", 1/2" - turning the ball valve on my home-made standpipe (non-durso) makes a world of difference in sound.

Do you have a pic of the overflow? It sounds like you have a vacuum in your drain pipe which a Durso modification will fix. I have a Durso in my overflow and it is dead quiet. The water rushing down the drain into the sump makes noise, but not the standpipe itself. It is a very easy thing to make from about $5 worth of PVC.

I wonder if the increased noise indicates buildup on the impeller or a pump that's getting ready to fail.

I suspect reduced flow may be causing the noise.

I don't have the built in type of over flow but mine was doing the same thing and all I did was lower the flow on my pump and that stopped it

The air inlet on the top of your overflow plumbing sound like it's pluged up. Probably w/ saltcreep. Clean your overflow plumbing and see if that help.

Here are pics to my setup...dead quiet as well!! I used the attached BV to adjust the air flow as needed. Much easier than drilling holes to get it right!
