Question

Help me with the overflow and plumbing for faster GPH

Ok guys a while back i got a 100G flat back hex used from ebay it was a upgrade from my 60g. Igot this tank as a set with the canopy stand and tank with a sump. This tank has gone a long way since i got it i have upgraded everything from MH to sumps and skimmers but forgot about the most important thing FLOW!!!! well the pump it came with was a RIO 3100 submisable pump for a return. from what see its rated at a 900gph.

Since i got this tank i dont what the size of the drains are or anything can someone please show me how to do this. i really want to swap out this rio and get something like a MAG for a return. At this time i am running a MAG 5 or my chiller and the flow is great.

As for my overflow i just took out all the bio balls that i had in there that reduced the splashing sound and i can hear it sound like a flowing faucet not that bad but you can hear it. The RIO sends the water up about 4ft up to the returns from he overflow box. oh and in the inside there is a Y thing that spilts it into 2 returns. when i put my finger next to the return on the bulk head the output is very weak but good enoght to send water up to the tank and into the over flow. When the tank is running i look into the over fow and there is about a good maybe 1 inch depth of water in there. my other plan is also to switch out the bulk head because they are the slip fit kind not the theade kind. and with a threaded end i have more options like flares and loc-lines and other things but thats another project now i want to up my pump.
I saw a really big thread yesterday about the sihon on a U-tube thing but mine was different because i cant adjust my overflow box because mine is fixedon the back wall of the tank. here are some pick to give you a better idea of it. thanks in advance guys

PS:also my return hose is submerged into the sump and i have it almost connected to the feedpump on the ASM G2 skimmer so that way most of the water that goes into the over flow goes through the skimmer 1st the the skimmers exit sends the water out the baffles. This way at least 85-90% of the water goes throught the skimmer.
well here are the pics

BTW on the picture of the inside of the overflow on the very bottom on the drain thee is a type of plastic thing that is about 2 1/2 inches tall with little holes kinda like a little stainer so if a fish or snail fell in it woud not get sucked into the sump

I bet it is loud set-up that way!
You need a stock-man stand pipe, you need to remove the "Y" from the return & If you can Hard PVC all the plumbing!
Ok sound like I'm barking, so we can break it down in steps to help you get better flow. I'll go look for the stock-man details brb

I actually prefer this design in your type set-up, easier to make & takes up less room.

Yeah i though of getting a Dursp stand pipe after i increase the flow. I really want to keep the Y on the return o slit the flow for both sides of the tank but i dont know wht MAG to get for a return to acomplish that. the RIO 3100 on there is rated @ 900gph and i know i lose some of those gph on the travel time up to the tank and the Y to the ruturns so i want to know which is the best MAG to get to still get a good flow and make up for the lost flow in the 4 ft it has to push it up and the fitting.

Well let me tell you something, you can only drain as much water that can pas through that drain BH. If you need more flow then Try adding a CL or tunze's or something of the sorts, you don't need or want massive flow through your sump in the first place. In my last 100g tank a 900gph would be just about right. If you hard plumb the & put the "Y" up top you should have room to add the stockman, which would make it super quite.

Yeah thats what i am trying to avoid in the tank the power head look. So i thought i can maybe add a stonger return pump and increase my turn over in the tank. At time i have a Seio 1500 and a Seio 820 and with he RIO return that puts my tank at a 32.2 overturn per hour and i want to shoot for about 40-45 overturn. i know the durso would make it more quite. But what i understand you are telling that it would not do anygood to get a stonger return pump?

Your return is limited, you could use the second BH to drain also & just go over the top with the return & Tee from there. This would get you about 2,000 GPH through the over flow. I'm guessing here but you can figure your drain limits by the size of the BH, there are calculators for this but typically in your size tank your limited to around 1,100gph roughly so that isn't much more flow. Your best way to increase flow would be a CL, you would have to go over the top but you can hide most of it except the suction part but the flow rate is limited by the pump & plumbing you go with.

get some plumbing in that overflow as stated above.

You should not count the return pump as "flow". Use CL's or power heads. Your return pump is just to equal your overflow. You overflow water to the sump to condition the water in the sump..that’s it. having the water for a longer time in the sump is better so you can heat/chill or skimmed effectively

ok thx guys i guess ill have to go the CL route. For a closed loop the feed for those is from the display tank right not the sump right?

1.) You definitly need a durso in your overflow. It must sound like a waterfall. The durso should set the height of the water level IN the overflow to about 1" below the wiers on the overflow. This will eliminate the waterfall sound.

2.) Depending on the size of the BH 1"-~750GP or 1.25 ~1000GPH max flow through the sump. If you want more you need a CLS!

3.) Yes the CLS will pull water from the display and return to the display. The overflow is only for the sump. If you plan to add a CLS then slow you sump flow to match your ASM G2 ~400GPH! Then do a CLS powered by a DART pump ~(3600gph)

I will go hunt down some pics for you of my Durso in my overflow and my CLS!

Here is a front shot where you can see the two intakes and many of the returns!

One other thing... There's no need to live with the sound of rushing water from your overflow. Just put a filter sock in the sump where the water enters and that flowing/splashing water sound will be history.

Thx 110 i will do the Durso thing first i just have to figure what the dimensions of the BH drain. as for the water level in then over flow you said get a durso and set it one inch below the teeth from over flow.
