Question

Heaters????

I'm wondering how many watts I should have for my system?

I've got a 125g tank with a 60g sump. I have not experienced a winter with my tank yet. Although the temp in the house usaully doesn't get too low in the winter...ok now I'm just babbling. So what is the reccommended wattage for my system or does anyone else have a similar system with x amount of wattage for heat?

I've got a 200 watt EBO JAGER in the sump now.

I do have a 50g trashcan outside with make-up water...what should I throw in there?

So who does make the best heaters?

Thanks,

Sean

I may have overkill in mine but I have a Via-Aqua titanium heater in mine and it works like a charm. It has the external adjustment with on off light yadda yadda . I had a Ebo that was bad and this was what I used to replace it. Im not bashing Ebo just this is what I replaced mine with.

4 watts per gallon 24/7 365 a year, cuz the house gets cold at night with the AC and this keeps the critters warm. You'll need a heater to warm your water change water before you put it in your systems. I like EJ's, I have one that is 8 years old. I would suggest that you buy the smaller ones to get several to make up your 4 watts per gallon, that way if one DOES stick in the on position, it will take a while to do any damage to your system, and if one goes out, the others will carry th load (for a surprisingly long time...) For example, in the 180 I have 4 x 200 watt heaters (include your sump volume), all located in the sump.

Cali Tdwyatt is correct go with more (and smaller heaters) redundency is a beautiful thing. For heaters I have also moved away from the glass type and currently run a Won pro heater for about a year now. I can tell you how well it runs as it has not turned on in since I bought it. (The only good thing about MH heating issues).

We also use the Won Pro heaters. We have had ours for just under a year and they are great. They managed to keep our tanks up to the proper temp last winter when we had a 5 day power outage and the house was at 45 degrees.

Hi Sean,

I have 400W in my 180 w/50 sump and 40 refuguim. It has no problem keeping it warm but it never gets cold here in Martinez. Multiple small heaters are better in case on fails on, it gives you more time to discover the problem before your fish boil. I have a 200W Via-Aqua titanium and 2x100 Ebo Jeagers. The Ebos are really made well but there is a lot of comfort in having a titanium cover.
