Have you prepared
I have been thinking about this as of late and thought it would be a good idea to mention to the rest of you.
Have you made written preparations on what to do with your tank if you should die/become incapacitated unexpectedly? Many of us don't have another person actively engaged in the care and maintenance of our tanks and if left alone with it you should ask if your spouse would be willing or able to take care of your tank (this is starting to sound like a commercial).
I would recommend that you take some time to type and print some detailed instructions on how to care for your tank and then put them in a ziploc bag and hang it on the door of your stand. then let your family members know that it is there,if something happens to you. it would also be a good idea to give them advice on how to take the tank down and points on selling everything if needed (including giving them info on how to contact your reefing buddies in your club and here on TRT).
Don't take the risk of your beloved critters dying because your family or friends don't know how to take care of them.

That's a good idea, Ryan. It's especially important, I think, for single folks. It would apply to any critter in your care, but a reef aquarium would be something that you wouldn't want just anyone to care for.

My wife would simply know to get on TRT or pnwmas and post a thread saying the first person to get here gets all rock and livestock. And probably auction off the tanks. I guarantee she wants nothing to do with keeping it. Dont get me wrong..she loves it........but she wants nothing to do with maintaining my tanks

one incentive for your family is the money they can get from selling the stuff.

If I die I hope my parents sell it off in the club that way they would have some extra money to help cover expenses.

I'm a single guy and right after I got my dog I put in my will on who will take care of him if somthing happens to me. I'm lucky because its my cousin who my dog loves so I dont have to worry. The same cousin is into aquariums also so I put in that he would get all my aquariums and equipment to do with as he sees fit. Its a great thing to do for anyone, having a will and written instructions on what you want done with things, it helps the loved ones who will be left with lots of work setting up funerals and stuff. I even have in my will how much money should be spent on booze and the kinds of beer kegs to buy for my going away party.

I'm with FlyGuy on this one. My wife likes it, but likely wouldn't want to maintain it. She knows who to call.
Honestly, this whole thread kinda creeps me out, in that buying Life Insurance kind of way....I plan to live forever.
On a slightly different and even more creepy note, check out:

They cremate, take your ashes and make a reef ball out of you....put that in your last request document. My sister wants this done.

I Have a mini binder full of instructions on how to maintain the tank, feed fish, do water changes, handle equipment, and topoff, and TRT information incase I get sick or get hospitalized. I dont plan on dying anytime soon, but I have gooten sick where I was in the hospital for close o a month, so if that should happen again, my tank will live while im not there.
