Polyp bailout.
This is a process that is usually associated with stress in
Pocillaporids and some
Acroporids, as well as many
Faviids,
Cynarina,
Scolymia, and related "large polyped" or solitary-polyped spp.
See info in either Eric (Borneman's) book or in Delbeek and Sprung. The polyp will grow a new skeleton if conditions that brought this about have been corrected.
