hair algae on my lr.........some tips needed
ok i have some hair algae (and some red slime that is almost gone so its not a problem) on my live rock in my reef tank. the tank is 2 months old. my water peramters are all good. i added 2 peices of coral, a tree soft coral, and a star burst polyp . since then i have had my hair algae problem. my phosphates are 0 and my nitrates and trites are good. so now i cant figure out where its coming from. i have tried pulling it off, and it doesnt work. does anyone know of an additive that gets rid of it? i will post pics although they make it look a little worse than it is. any help is greatly appreciated. btw i have hermits and snails that dont seem like they are even going anywhere near it. i am re adding my powder blue tang who hopefully eats it all but other than that i am worried. i want coraline algae not hair !

first, no nitrites are good, sounds like the tank is having a mini-cycle due to additions or it has not cycled completely. get a toothbrush and scrub the hair off, and increase flow to the area to prevent settling of detrius.
this is one of the steps of progression of a new tank, keep it in check and it should disappear.

i was told that scrubbing it would spread it even more. if i leave it will it eventually go away if there are no nitrites and or phosphates?

algae also feeds on trates. hair algae is so tough because it creates its own food source. it traps waste in its threads and they decompose, feeding the hair nitrates and phos, the hair grows, traps even more waste, etc etc,,,vicious cycle. another thing that will twist your brain, even though you test 0 P, you still have it. how, it is being consumed as quickly as it is released.
