A GFCI is not designed to keep your house from burning down. That is the job of the breaker in the main panel. The only purpose of the GFCI is to keep people from being electrocuted.

Sure for it's quickness ,but if you didn't have it it could heatup and start a fire.

The only job of a GFCI as EC stated is to prevent you from electrocution. The job of a breaker is to trip due to a shorted or overloaded circuit. The only reason why we have fuses and breakers is to protect the wiring in our homes, not the devices plugged into them.. that is why NEC requires GFCI outlets in wet locations today.. to protect you, and not the wiring or device (as perviously stated, that is the job of a breaker/fuse)
The only thing that I keep on a GFCI circuit is the lights and a heater (if I ever run one) all the pumps and such will run through a normal receptacle.
When i ran magnetic MH ballasts, they would get really hot if I lost power and they tried to start right after. In most GFCI's when the power fails under load, when the power returns and a load is pulled instantly (to say try to restart a MH lamp) it will trip the GFCI, hence not allowing the ballast to overheat and fail or continuously try to start a hot bulb and cause bulb failure.
just my $.02

No offence, but I don't think you understand how this works. When things start to heat up, it's the breaker that is designed to be the weak link. When all is working properly, the breaker will trip before the rest of the circuit has a chance to heat up. A GFCI works on a completely different principle. The supply current moving through a GFCI should be very close to the current returning to the panel through the GFCI. If the current finds another path to ground, like through a person, the amount of current returning through the GFCI will be reduced and the GFCI will trip. It has nothing to do with heat or fire prevention. A GFCI just controls where the current goes. If as little as 5mA is lost in the circuit (it went somewhere other than back through the GFCI) the GFCI will trip.

P.S. I know what it is design for, just saying it can happen. And I seen a house catch on fire because the breaker didn't trip and take the breaker out and checks out fine.

No,the breaker will do the whole circuit. But when they 1st came out(GFCI breakers)use to trip for no reason(nucent tripping) .

ok i have 1 15 amp gfci breaker ....but i have no idea what it feeds ....evreything else is marked for a specific room but that one just says gfi ...i think it might be the basement because thats that only room that isnt marked on the box and it seems logical in case of a flood ....its not possible for the whole house to be connected to that one breaker somehow is it ?
