Grounding Probe?
I was wondering how many of ya all use a grounding probe? Are they worth having? What's your view on them? Thank.

I have two in my tank and it is worth the $9.95 each insurance that if some thing shorts in the tank that the fish or me will not be fried as saltwater is a very good conductor of electricity. Save yourself and your tank from electrocution from a faulty heater or bad pump a good titanium ground probe.

Grounding Probe
The bottom line is, grounding probes work best in conjunction with some type of GFI. I had a dedicated breaker put in for my 80gal with a GFI outlet. If you don't want to go through the trouble you can get a GFI power strip or adapter. HTH

first time you get shocked, you'll see the need for one!

with all the high tech gadjets out there the gfi and grounding probes are your best investment to not only save your tank but your house and loved ones.
as aquarium keepers we all know sooner or later there will be a leak or other electrical mishap.

(pre Xmas running around stuff)do the search, read up , ask any other questions you might have that are not covered,,,,
water n ' 'lectricity,,,,any reason not to take minimum precautions?
like i've said b4, i work with 138,000 volts of 'lectricity for a living

I got shocked earlier this year from a faulty Mag pump. It's painful. I should have known better. I have a grounding probe now.

I have also heard that because of the all electrical equipment in the tank, somethimes, without a ground, your tank can build up a potential in the water. It will not kill anything but in one of my books by Tullock, he points out that stray voltage can affect some reef inhabitants delicate senses and cause slow growth or erratic behavior. One of my friends measured his 75G tank and recorded a 50 Volt poential without a grounding probe. A grounding probe will help drain this away "stray" current. In the office here we have a 10G Fresh Water with only 1 little PH in it and it just measured 3V volts. Picture what my 20G would be with 3PH, a skimmer, and HOB filter and a heater. Get a voltmeter, hook one end to a known ground and the other in the tank and take a look at your voltage.
