First some background - In about 1990 -1993 I had a mini reef tank, and I worked for a marine fish store, and I also worked for a comapny maintaining marine tanks. So I have a lot ot knowledge of what was right back then. But a lot has changed since, as everyone knows. So I am basically a novice with a lot of knowledge of antiqe systems.
I bought some corals that arrived yesterday. and I wanted to keep )at least at first) the corals I had kept successfully back then. I ordered several, but there one I could not ID, and my
green star polyps didn't seem to be in the shipment.
The one I couldn't ID looked like a beef tongue.
But now, one of the polyps (from the taste buds on the tongue)has opened, and it is indeed the
green star polyp. The one polyp on the large tongue-shaped organism. There is also a white "film" like on uncured line rock on part of the tongue. But the film is only on about 1/2 inch square of the area.
I am with a 20L tank, with 130W oflighting, and the rock is only in about 3 inches of water.
All parameters are in line:
SG: 1.025 (w.refractometer)
pH .8.3
Ammonia 0
Nitrite 0
Nitrate 0 (I have had aome alge that seems to have absorbed it)
Phosphates 0 (again, alge)
Calcium 350ppm
Temp 79.9 (I know, a little high.)
Everyone else, (including the other corals I added yesterday) are doing great.
Does it take a while for the polyps to emerge? Or do I need to try to take advantage of the 14 day guarantee?
Still looks like a beef tongue, with one tiny polyp, but it looks like some are ready to burst open. I don't know what's up with this.
Before, I could always see the coral in the store (before internet) and know it was good. But with Mailorder, I don't know how bad the problem is.
Any advice would be appriciated.
