Green Mandarin & Spotted Mandarin
Hello everyone, I have 90g 115# LR, 3-4" LSB (see profile pics) and it is teaming with copods and micro-organisms. I currently have a green mandarin and he is very very happy. Swims around everywhere, loves being the center of attention, and his belly is stuffed. The question I have is will a spotted madarin, and a green mandarin get along. I know there is plenty of food for the both of them, but I do not want to put in anything that could disrupt the health of my green mandarin. Let me know what you guys think, or if anyone has had a personal experience with housing both of these fish that would be preferred.. THANKS !!!

It is not overly aggressive towards other fish, except for conspecifics. I have never done it nor have I ever heard anyone doing it. Also I have never seen it in my LFS..

I would be afraid they would be too close in apearence and not get along. I'm not really sure what one mandarin could do to another, they are not exactly bruisers (unless you are a pod). I would check out Melev's reef to see if there is info there. He knows mandarins pretty well

Did I ever tell you about the time Brasky went hunting? Well anyway, Brasky decides he's gonna hunt down all four members of the Banana Splits. He stalks and kills every one of them with a machete. They all beg for their lives, except Fleagul.

Anytime you introduce 2 mandarins that don't pair up , you run the risk of territorial disputes and conflict. I don't know how long you have had the one mandarin but they can decimate a population of pods pretty quickly, esp if they won't take other foods. If they are feeding on your pods, for how long till the supply runs low without an external pod supply.
For the record, I see the "The LFS keeps xxx together" , keep in mind that the fish population at the at most shops is transient, a lot of times fish that we wouldn't think of trying to keep together, in small tanks, often the small holding tanks they are kept in keep the fish in a constant state of red alert, what you might not see is the sick or injured fish from this practice. Not saying that all stores do it but, it happens

I wouldn't risk 2 in a 90 gl, even if they didn't fight. Like Doug said above, 1 mandarin can eat a lot of pods. Many people believe a 90 is too small for 1 over an extended period, so i don't think 2 is worth trying, you could end up killing both.

Long term keeping of any of the dragonettes, ie, the mandarins or so called scooter blennies is one of the few cases where I would actually set up a refugium to cultivate copepods as food, Pods are scavengers and generally if you have an abundance of pods its a precursor to unwanted algae and high nitrate/phosphate issues, often to the detriment of a healthy coral population

a 90's too small for a mandarin to thrive? **** it! for decades i've been fascinated by nudibranchs and mandarin gobies - they are the reason i originally wanted a marine tank... then i learned about most nudis being obligate feeders (and therefore how tough it is to keep them unless u just HAPPEN to have the ONE spp your particular type of nudi will eat in your tank) so i gave up on them, but still planned to get a mandarin goby once my tank was good and stable (in a year or so). but you say a 90gal's too small?
