green blob ID?
Can anyone tell me what this is? It came attached to the rock when I got the colony polyps. Its bright green and have bubbles almost like grapes on it. Its getting bigger and is really cool looking.

Say hello to Mr. bubble algae. Get him now or he will take over the tank. I reccommend either getting an emerald mythrix crab, or pulling the rock out of the tank and scraping the stuff into the sink then rinsing the rock off in water before returning it to the tank. pretty looking but bad mojo in the end.

Yes you want to do it in saltwater (the scrubbing).

Could you just chisel that part of the rock off? might be easier, and less stressful to your button polyps.
From the pic, looks like you could w/out loosing more than a polyp or two...but can't tell for sure.

btw...I agree with everyone on the ID.
If you have a refugium, you could move it there..but you definitely don't want it in your display.
if you decide NOT to chisel that part off, scrub VERY good. That algae can get a pretty good foothold, and while you think you've gotten it all, some roots, still in the rock, will regrow.
(thus the reason I suggest you just break off that part of the rock altogether)

Since when is this stuff completely and utterly bad?
If you have good water quality (low phate, trate), it will only remain a small patch, or dissappear completely. Don't worry you don't have to remove it.

I agree. I had a couple bubbles in my tank for 6 months. I bought a emerald crab, but he disappeared. Anyhow... after maintaining water quality the cyano, bubble, and other undesirables eventually disappeared.

I think the reason to get rid of it even if it isn't growing is to prevent the disaster if you get a spike in phosphates or nitrates or something that allows the bubble algae to take off. i have seen the stuff go from a few bubbles to spreading throughout the tank in a matter of days. Prevention is the key with the potentialy invasive stuff. if you like the look of it, it is your risk. if your not attached to it too much... i say get it out quickly.
