Green Algae

I am starting to get a lot of green algae in my tank. I know this is due to water quality as well as me using tap water. I started the tank with tap water and used this for about the last six months to top it off. I have begun topping the tank off with RO water recently. I assume eventually the minerals essential for the growth of this algae will be depleted and it will die off. In the meantime, is there anything I can do to control it. Someone suggested I remove the rock and scrub it with a brush to remove the algae, but I can't see how this wouldn't have a negative impact on my LR. Any suggestions?

start running your skimmer wet. this will remove more of the nutrients that are fueling your algae. you will need to pay more attention to the salinity of the tank though. you also do not want to flood the place with skimmate.

i would only scrub the LR if it is absolutely unbearable. everytime you remove the LR you will prolly kill some of the sponges. sponges are one of your best nutrient filters. but it does remove a lot of the nutrients that the algae have locked up.
