Granite Reef Canopy to heavy?
I work at a granite/metal shop. I personally run a waterjet and have axcess to these materials and the machines here to make a canopy for my saltwater reef tank. but then i got thinking that it may be to heavy for the glass. at first i wanted to make it out of 2cm with some lexan to on the inside . Now i think i will mill the granite down to tile thickness with thin wood on the inside and lexan on top of that, a three piece sandwitch to strengthen it. Basicly it will be around 50-90 lbs "guess" i just dont want to waste my time if it is unsafe. I havent been able to find anything on weight limits for a canopy.
90g aquarium weight limit??
thanks

Personally I think it would be to heavy for the Glass buy it's all about how you build and support the canopy.
One other thought is how are you going to access the lights feed the fish and clean the glass plus all those other wonderful things we have to be under the hood for.
Sounds like it would look really cool. Maybe you could build corner posts.

Hmm, not sure what the weight limit on the tank is, but if you're getting close to 100 lbs I would start looking for some other means of structural support in addition to just sitting it on the tank.

I think 100lbs would be fine as long as it is evenly distributed, but if not could cause some problems.

How thick is the glass? if its haven't been built yet maybe have them use 5/8" glass.

I would probably just mount it to the wall and give it the appearance of sitting on the tank. If you have all the means to do it then I would go for it. Nothing like seeing different setups and such and I am sure it would look pretty cool.

you could hang it from the ceiling or wall brackets that attach to the top of the canopy with a pulley system that would allow you to raise it to work in the tank

3cm granite is about 15-17 punds per squere foot. so 2 cm would be somewhere around 8-10. I have been in granite business for while. and I don't think its really good idea for conopy. if you cut it too thin it may start breaking up. I would go with wood !! easier to wrok with and you don't have to worry about the rganite to split at seams and break off and possibly breaking your tank.

I would make an aluminum frame mounted to the wall and support the canopy from the inside (hidden) and have the front hinged for access... justa thought

Good idea. Opens the door to lots of possibilities. Would support on a wall though not on top of tank. Lets see some pics whatever you do!
