It all depends on the rest of your set up, especially the Protien Skimmer. With a BB you want to export all the nutrients before they have a chance to break down. That means having enough flow to keep detrius in suspension and a powerful enough PS to remove it from the water column. I don't have any nano experience but I do have BB experience.
Is it safe to assume you wouldn't have a sump? If so it may be tough to run a powerful enough PS and have enough flow and a place to allow things to settle out. But then again, if you keep the bio load low and don't over feed I don't see why you couldn't find a decent balance and be successful.

the LFS has a 18H with a BB that has been up for years the bottom and back have a pretty good coat of coraline. they use a bakpak skimmer and a powerhead.
