good news! got my live rock and some base rock. now to cycle

hey guys,

i got myself 30 lb of LR and a free 25 lb of base rock for 80 bucks. Bought it from someone off of Dallas/FW marine aquarium society.

Now to start the cycle. Some people have suggested an eel, some have suggested damsels, and even a dead raw shrimp?

I will be starting tomorrow so let me know what you guys think! I will try to get some pictures up asap.

I got my temperatues to 78, salinity to 1.26

I guess from now I just let it run for a while?

Hi! Good Luck with all!You salinity is WAY HI!should be more like 1.024 - 1.026.So just take some water out and add reg. DO/DI water, till you get it in range. As for cycling, I'd do the dead shrimp method. And remember do things in a small and slow method and you'll have fun in this hobby.

Where is the rock now? Technically it should have started already I don't believe in cycling a tank with fish. But first we must ask did you get cured or uncured rock and how was it transported home? If it was cured and you transported it correctly, you may not need to cycle anything If it was uncured or left out in the air too long, then simply adding it to the tank will start the cycle.

Do Not cycle the tank with fish. very bad for their gills.

what does the LR look like? is it covered i algae or coralline? this will help determine how long you should cycle/cook the LR before adding nutrients to the system.
