Question

Good Idea or Bad Idea...

My dad lives at the beach to which we visit about once every month or so. Last weekend, we went down and walked on the beach (too cold to do anything else) and I found a 8-9" Conch shell with a 3" hole broken out of the top of it. The first thing I thought of was to boil it, then put in the tank as decoration and maybe a hideout for future inhabitants.

Is this a good idea or bad idea? I know before you put ANY new shells in, you should boil it for at least 30 minutes. Has anyone done this in their own tank?

I was thinking of mounting a coral frag or attaching some caulerpa and make a new caulerpa forest.

that should be fine. the only concern i have is if it came from a very polluted area. the boiling should kill any problem critters.

Do you consider Wrightsville Beach to be polluted?

We're beach people and we were gathering sand and shells to make some decorative "stuff" for the house when I stumbled on it.

if you would think twice about walking there in bare feet there then i would feel it is polluted. if it is not good enough for your feet than it sure is not going in my tank.
