What do you mean by having the water cycled? You could just use the water from his tank. Sounds like a good plan, are you planning on setting up right away or cooking the rock or what?

Here is how you go about the move.

1) Get as many containers to hold the current water that you can, and be sure you can move them when full.
2) Get some Rubbermaid bins to put the rocks, corals, and fish into along with enough water to cover them during the ride.
3) Make sure you have made as much fresh ASW as possible at your house and have it ready to go, as the water you bring from him will never be enough even if it looks like it.
4) Remove the sand bed, throw it out, and move the tank and equipment.
5) Clean the tank with some RO water just to get rid of any nasty slime layers. If it is bad enough you may want to use a tiny bit of vinegar as well.
6) If you want sand then add new sand to tank, although I would most likely go bare bottom with it.
7) Start aquascaping the tank. Put the first layer of rock in and then add some of the water so you are sure to keep it moist. That will keep the die off to a minimum.
8) Continue scaping and adding water until the tank is full.
9) Add the fish to the tank.
10) Turn on all of the equipment.

Then you can sit back and enjoy the fruits of all your hard work, and the awesome free tank you have!

Congrats!

Cool deal.. free is always fun... I got a free 250 gal acrylic tank with 2 LARGE eheim canister filters... I am quickly learning that even getting the stuff for free is a good way to spend money! lol... This free tank is gonna cost me HUNDREDS to get up and running with SW.

If you dont mind not having sand. BB is the way to go. Its a LOT easier to clean. Just suck it out during a water change and your clean. AND you can put more flow in your tank and not have to worry about sand storms. I like my sand though.

Cleaning detritus off the bare bottom of the display should be easier, depending on how you aquascape the tank. Of course if you place rock where it can trap detritus under it and the flow cannot blow it out of there, then it will be more difficult to work with that spot.
