Glass scraped algae

I was wondering... the green or diatom algae we scrap off the glass obviously gets knocked back into the water and floats around. Does the floating algae serve the same purpose as phyto?

sorta but not really.it will be collected in the skimmer or when you vaccume up the substrate.
