get rid of my fluval?

i have a 75 hex tank with 35 lbs live rock, an aquac remora, and a fluval 304.

From what i've read the fluval may be doing more bad then good for my tank. the tank has been running for almost 2 months so far and the nitrates are still less then 5.

i plan on buying another 50 lbs of live rock this weekend. should i just get rid of the fluval?? it came with the tank for free so i wont be losing anything getting rid of it, besides all of the new media.

If ou don't have a sump then your fluval is good for media such as carbon etc. I would just lose the sponge and make sure to do appropriate maintenance so that it doesn't keep detritus from getting to your skimmer. Your Nitrates are awefully high for being running for 2 months. What is your W/C schedule?

It's a good place to put chemical in ,but you need to change them every other day.

I dont think a reading of 5 on a 2 month old tank is that bad]'
If you are going to add 50 lbs of Live Rock yoiu want to cure it over, preferably in the dark to shed as much organics as you can, (search cooking live rock)
If its been tanked locally and you bring it home wet you may not have a big spike in Nitrogen compounds but you will go thru another algae cycle
You could use the fluval as a sponge carbon filter before a water change and blow the LR off with a powerhead or baster and trap as much crud as possible, but clean it after, DONT let it sit around any length of time or you will get elevated nitrates , etc

lol..... I have a fluval 403 on my 65g. its been running for 4 months now. cleaned it 2 months ago. i dont have a big bio load and have about 70lbs of LR. I do 15% water changes weekly and everything is fine. I have heard good and bad things about canister filters. IMO--- mine is still running. I do have about 4 bags of chemi pure in it tho
