Genetically altered fish face scrutiny

I thought this was an intresting article. I know it isn't saltwater related, but may have implications on our hobby.

The government of California never ceases to amaze me, on the one hand they have a pretty much anything goes attitude, cept a few issues I hold near and dear then they ban import of a seemingly harmless little fishy. Its not food and its not likely to survive if released into the wilds, the non altered version has been around for a long time.
I have to wonder why we go to such great lengths to change everything to suit us, is it because we can. I realize that alot of similar research may lead to answers to cause and cure of things that do threaten us, but I feel its ethically wrong to create designer pets on this level. This is way beyond selective breeding to bring out desired traits, its actual combining the genetic materiel from dissimilar species simply to create a new must have commodity. I don't like my critters messed with, don't buy dyed fish or corals, i think there is a lot of natural beauty as found.
The problem with doing things because we can is that every success pushes it farther
