General Questions for all reefers.

I always wanted to post this sort of thread, and when I was a real "newbie" even more so...

Ok here's the game, play if you want to...
1. Name one "simple" piece of equipment everyone should have for their reef.

2. Name two Supplements/Additives that every reefer should have. And state why.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I'll start it off...
1. A turkey Baster-- invaluable for spot feeding, and many-many other tasks.

2.
A.
Lugol's Solution (Iodine) - great additive for soft inverts. It improves coloration and polyp extension
B.
Selcon - great vitamin additive when soaked in food (for fish). Actually, I'm not really sure why this product is so effective (maybe someone else can enlighten me.)

A dripline for acclimations (I had no clue how easy this was to make until an LFS, of all places, showed me.)

Um, we don't add any additives, because we've come to realize over the years that we don't need them. So, I'll say
1. High quality salt
2. Kalk (or the cheapo pickling lime), to keep calcium up for the SPS and LPS, and to really boost coraline and halimeda growth. (We can't kill the halimeda, so it gets pruned at the roots and taken to the LFS for some nice credit.)

1) a good book on how to setup and care for a reef tank

2) Pickling lime or kalk to maintain Ca
Reef Builder or other Alk booster to maintain Alk and stablize Ca
Ok I guess I have to come back and edit Mrs. Smith can type faster than me. A trace elements additive to maintain levels of various elements used up.

What a segue, Doug! That leads me to what I was gonna mention. A credit , card!!! And, as stated in a recent thread, when that is maxed out, you can use it to clean the glass of your tank.

Additives? I don't use any. At least not right now.

OH, I know...a good sense of humor, coupled with patience and stick-toit-ivess (is that a real word?? uhmmm...that's a ref question, not AV)

Proper light set-up for what you plan to keep in your reef tank.

I add no additives except IO for water change and some kalk.

Quite frankly I am shocked that no one really uses any kinds of additives other that Ca/Alk derivatives. I was at the fish store the other day, and the people there made me feel like I was killing my reef by not using Lugol's solution... ::::They convinced me to buy it....I guess I was had by a sales pitch::::
Well I guess I can chalk this up to experience...
Does any one here use additives of any type other than Calc/Alk supplements?
--- Maybe that was the better question to ask...
Cheers.

Well, since you rephrased the question...nope! I think most addtives are sold as a come-on and aren't needed. Especially since we have no accurate method of measure for the things they want us to add.

1. Name one "simple" piece of equipment everyone should have for their reef.

THE BEST SKIMMER YOU CAN BUY

2. Name two Supplements/Additives that every reefer should have. And state why.

WATER FOR WATER CHANGES AND KALKWASSER

Instead of making a dripline you can use an IV drip, you can get them at vet supply or medical supply places.
