Gen X heating water

I have been having a hard time lately keeping my water at one temnperature and i have isolated a non obvious culprit.

The genX pcx 40 i use to run my MR-2. I have two wireless thermometers, one for each tank and they read exactly the same side by side. If i place one submerged where i drain into the sump and one submerged where my skimmer drains into the tank the water is a full degree warmer.

Is this normal or is this pump running warmer than it should?

The pump is in tight quarters, but it is elevated a few inches and has 4-6 inches above and on both sides as well as adequate air flow.

thanks

That doesnt sound odd at all. I have ran many (and continue to) Gen-X external pumps. The body of these pumps gets pretty warm to the touch so it only goes to reason that some of that would transfer to the water. I would consider getting some more air to the pump if you can, even if its a small fan. If it is creating a temp problem for your water try adding a fan blowing directly on the water in the ump. This can drop up to a couple of degrees and is much cheaper than a chiller!

unfortunately, a downside of an otherwise great pump!

I have two gen-x's (PCX 70 and a 40) on my tank...and they add some serious heat as well. But very reliable. I love 'em.

Thats a realy good point, the fans get dust build up realy quickly and it restricts the very air that is used to help cool the pump.
