Gah Nitrite probs

Ugh im having a Nitrite problem. Live rock is supposed to be the biological filtration in a SW tank right? does the rock need good flow to get the good bacteria in it? my ammonia registers unreadable but the nitrite is like 5 ppm + do i need more flow or should I put a floss cartridge in my HOB filter? which right now is my only source of flow kinda weak i suppose...

How old is the test kit you are using and what brand? , More info on your setup will help us to try and find out what is going on.

Sorry heh i meesed up the reading its about 1.0 nitrite ppm still high though my bad and the test kit is Aquarium Pharmaceuticals Inc. the one with mascot doc wellfish. my tanks ratio of LR is a 5 gallon with about 3.5 lbs. ammonia still zero and just added 3 lbs of it but before i didnt have the 3 lbs and the nitrite still registered at 1.0 so i dont think that was the prob have any idea guys? havent added in the floss cartridge yet to the HOB filter thanks for any info u got guys. oh LR was cured the LFS had the rock in their system for about 1 month

The ammonia and nitrite eatin bacteria need an oxygen rich enviroment right guys does that mean i need more flow in my tank? thats what i thought was the prob in my tank if so im supposin ill need to pick up like a powerhead or bubbler or somthin. I have on Green spotted pufferfish in the tank + mussels and barnacles. I feed the mussels and barnacles about once a day and puffer everyother but I had the green spooted puffer from before i had the mussels and barnacles and it still registered 1.0 nitrites. Ugh....

2 mussels and 3 barnacles the mussels about 1 in long by 1/2 in wide and barnacles are the size water drops maybe a little smaller
