Funky,smelly water!!

I recently had a small 2 inch orange liknea starfish die in my 12 gallon nano cube. I have not been able to locate him to remove it. The water though, has been funky since it died....about 2 weeks. The surface of the water is nasty and its smells bad. The other occupants don't seem to be affected one way or the other, and water parameters or "ok"...

I have done large weekly water changes, since I discovered its death.

My question is- About how long should the water take to clear up so I don't have to do water changes so frequently???

Is there anything else i can do to aid my tank??

Thanks...........

Test your water for ammonia, and nitrite. Keep changing water until your results are 0.

As long as it's still in the tank - it'll still stink up the water. If you can (you might have to) break the tank down and fish it out of there to be certain
